Who Scalloped it Better?

Victoria Beckham was the first to be seen in her VICTORIA Victoria Beckham collection and I’m glad she did!  She was definitely the right person to create a hype for the launch of the new line. The piece she decided to show was a very girly drop waist dress with scallop detailing. Her other great accessory were ofcourse the signature VB glasses.

Michelle Williams was later seen in the white and black version at this year’s BAFTA after party.  Even with Michelle’s adorable pixie cut, her look didn’t make a big of an impact as Victoria’s version.  Plus, Victoria‘s chunky booties were a great contrast to the ultra feminine look, while Michelle‘s pumps were a tad boring.  I would have possibly voted for Michelle‘s look if she had paired her dress with bright or neon colored heels.  Otherwise, Victoria is a clear winner!

The Victoria by Victoria Beckham collection is available at AlOthman.

Chit Chat with Rachel Zoe

We have had the pleasure to interview the one and only Rachel Zoe and we would like to share her answers with you! Enjoy!

Flashback to a year ago to the date nearly, moments before your very first collection debut for FW11. How were you feeling? Could you anticipate the reception to come?

Words cannot describe how I was feeling – anxious, nervous, excited. I could never have anticipated such an incredible reception.

You’ve described your pieces ‘instant[ly] chic’ and ‘easy glamour,’ to name a few. Could you elaborate on that in a few words?

The collection is all about wearable yet glamorous fashion – it’s for women who love fashion and aren’t afraid to take risks. It’s easy chic. Like the sequin cardigan for example – throw it on over a printed dress or with white denim and a printed top – not only is it incredible versatile, but it will instantly change any look. That’s what the collection is all about – versatility, accessibility, ease and of course, glamour.

The RZC is relatively extensive and aesthetically diverse, your designs & accessories cater to a broad range of style identities. Was this intentional?

Yes. I wanted to make sure there was something for everyone and I am inspired by so many different people in my life, all with very different styles. It also speaks to my overall aesthetic – I love to mix and match different silhouettes and elements from different decades, for me that’s half the fun of fashion.

The 60s & 70s seem to be strong sources of inspiration to you, from musical preference, personal style to your own designs. What aspects of this era do you find most appealing?

Everything! I love anything mod from the 60s – the prints, colors, shift dresses, gogo inspired boots. I’m also completely obsessed with everything from the 70s – the menswear inspired suiting, maxi’s, wide leg pants, platforms and sequins. I’m honestly inspired by everything from the fashion icons, magazine spreads, movies and music.

Jane Birkin, Briggite Bardot, Bianca Jagger, Edie Sedgwick… Would it be fair to say that you designs cater to the modern day archetypes of these style icons?

I think so – at least that’s what I am going for. I really just focus on incorporating different elements from each icon – that’s what is so great about each collection, you can truly mix and match each piece to make every look your own.

New at AlOthman

An exciting week here at AlOthman!

Just arrived on our shop floor new designer Huishan Zhang, and up-and-coming Chinese-born designer graduated from Central Saint Martins known for his “signature balance between Chinese aesthetic and pattern-cutting, and Western levels of quality and crafstmanship.”

Another exciting new addition to our brands is Pierre Balmain, a sister brand to Balmain focusing on hip and youthful wear  channeling Balmain‘s well-known rock and roll aesthetic.

and last but not least a brand dear to our hearts, Alessandra Rich, we have received some stunning easy-going summery lace dresses.

Designer Spotlight: Isabel Marant

Here at AlOthman, we are excited to share with you the latest arrival of our newly acquired bohemian chic brand Isabel Marant.

Initially started as an accessories line in 1989 and then expanded to include womenswear, this hip Parisian label is the go-to brand for global trendsetters. Known for its pared-down effortlessly chic aesthetic the pieces produced whether they are bomber jackets, embellished vests or wedge sneakers ooze of Parisian cool and have known to be coveted from the moment they hit the runway!

The brand’s spirit is clearly reflected in the designers famous quote in which she says: ” If a French girl has to go out, she is going to start by dressing up, then at the last minute, she’s going to grab the old jeans that she was wearing all day and say, ‘Forget it! I feel more me like this!’”

Isabel Marant’s beautiful pieces are now available at AlOthman. Looking forward to seeing you on our shop floor!

Designer Spotlight: 10 Crosby by Derek Lam

One of our favorite designers,  Derek Lam, has a new diffusion  line out called 10 Crosby which is named after the address of his Soho office. It is also said that on that same street is where the designer found his first muse model Hanne Gaby Odiele as well as inspiration from well-dressed women he sees in the neighborhood. Lam also intended to reflect the new brand “back on the city he loves and let the clothes speak for themselves,” while still diverting attention away from himself in order for the brand to stand-alone by itself.

Lam, known for his signature downtown sophistication, wanted to provide Lam loyalists-on-a-budget as well as his core customers a newer brand that reflected cool utility while reflecting innate, effortless style with urban aesthetic. It is quite evident for us that the collection is inspired by real women because each pieces from the collection reflects style and comfort as well as being able to be worn and interpreted differently by every woman who wears it.

Lam says, ” Can I say [the 10 Crosby woman] is me as a [woman]?” jokingly. “[I feel like the line] is speaking to me as a consumer. That’s what keeps me excited. [This collection] is about my favorite fabrics, my favorite shapes and my favorite colors. And just getting the change to do what I love, and I hope that comes through.”

We couldn’t agree more Mr. Lam.

Super Nova Nicola

nicola-formichetti

Anyone who is anyone in the fashion industry is quite familiar with the name Nicola Formichetti. He is the Fashion Director of Vogue Hommes Japan, Uniqlo, the fantastic styles of Pop sensation Lady Gaga, as well as newly appointed Creative Director of Thierry Mugler.

After just unveiling his Mugler Menswear collection in Milan last week, he is on his toes for his Paris presentation of Mugler Womenwear for Fall 2011. We all await with high anticipation for what he will design.

In a recent interview, he gives clues to his new venture with insight such a:

“I’m not here to re-create what [Thierry Mugler] did. It was perfect for the time. I’m going to do something for today and the future . . . I want to give dreams and fantasy and all those things — and I want people to wear those clothes.”

Taking on the rebirth of famed fashion house Thierry Mugler is no easy feat, but with help on his side such as the visions and inspirations of close friend Lady Gaga, I am sure he will be a huge success. Saying of her input:

“It’s me and her just having fun and getting very inspired from the idea of Mugler. She’s very much involved, more in the early stages.”

As always, AlOthman is on top of the newest designers and most interesting ventures, and we can’t wait to bring to you the Thierry Mugler collection for Summer 2011 and the Nicola Formichetti designed Fall collection as well.
