Hope to see you all there.

A Zero Pop Up

blog

Chilean designer Maria Cornejo has decided to take on the Fabulous French Fashionistas. Her brand Zero + Maria Cornejo has been around for ten years and is extremely popular in the American market, even more so since Michelle Obama began dawning her garments all over the world.

Now, she has plans to focus on the European markets beginning in Paris, where she will be opening a Pop-Up store at the Brachfeld Gallery from June 20th to July 11th.

The concept of a Pop-Up store has been popularized during the recent economic crisis as it allows designers to have their collection present however without the permanent fixtures that a boutique entails. It also allows for the designers to be far more creative as it doe not have to withstand the test of time.

I will be in Paris during that time doing the Resort collections, therefore will definitely try to make it there to take some snaps for you.

1920′s Fashion Revival

dsc_0101

I really can’t wait for Coco Avant Chanel, the biopic on the legendary couturier Coco Chanel. But it seems that the movie is too far fetched for me right now. So until I get a hold of the movie (with English sub-titles) or speak French fluently, I’ll settle for embracing Coco’s style in the 1920′s, one of the most fashionable eras in history.

This Tracey Reese drop waist flapper style dress in nude shade with a sequined underlay gives a youthful spin to cocktail chic and a modern twist to the 1920′s. Pair the dress with dainty 20s cherry red heels, strands of pearl necklaces, soft hair waves, and a red lipstick for some intelligent 1920′s nostalgia and luxury.

The flapper-ish Tracy Reese dress is available in store for KD 249.

Cinemagic’s Weekly Screenings

spring

Directed by Kim Ki-duk

When: Thursday, May 28, 2009 at 7:00 PM

Where: Old Salmiya, above LG Electronics

“Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter…. and Spring ushers the audience into silent solitude through meticulously planned cinematography that maximizes the effect of the natural environment. The environment is essential to the story as it takes place in an idyllic valley that is untouched by the continually modernizing civilization. In the middle of the valley is a small lake in which a small floating monastery drifts by the forces of the nature. This has an allegorical meaning as it supports the notion that everything is part of a greater plan in which individuals can make small ripples that will affect the individual throughout life.

The story is split into the four seasons as it begins and ends with spring as the title suggests. Each frame is carefully planned as color, form, and movement come together into a meaningful expression of either spiritual, moral, existential meaning, or a personal meaning which rests behind the eye of the beholder.”

Marvel at Marlene

marlenemdi

Marlene Dietrich, famous in the 1920’s and 1930’s for her singing and acting, may just be the reason you wear your trends today. This woman described by John Wayne as, “the most intriguing woman I have ever know”, broke all boundaries laid out for women at the time.

Famously donning a full on mans suit in an era when it was absolutely unheard of, she brought on a craze of tailored jackets and tuxedo detailing as seen on the Balmain runways as of late. She also managed to shine in glittering gowns a la Proenza Schoulers Fall cocktail collection and bundles of lace shown at Luisa Beccaria. She also had a tendency to wear structured futuristic looks such as those from Calvin Klein and Roland Mouret, even working the high shoulder look- the epitome of this season.
She may not have always looked pretty, but she was definitely one that caught your eye, and kept it interested.
So next time you see your mothers watching an old classic black and white movie, don’t roll your eyes and walk away, take notice of the magnificent women that graced the screens then. Who knows, its maybe there that you will find the inspiration for your next knockout outfit.

Another Frill Statement

keria-vs-dita

It wasn’t long ago when Keira Knightley exuded charm and style in an Alexis Mabille cobalt blue frock with polka dotted detailing on the tulle trims and frilly bows at the pockets.  The dress must have been a fashion hit if Dita Von Teese opted fot the same style when attending a reception party for Dsquared, matching it with her signature red lipstick and black patent pumps with ankle straps.

Even though Dita looks magnificent as she always does, I would much rather see the Alexis Mabille piece on someone with a taller figure … I think it looks finer with wider space between the tulle trimmed hem and the shoes, but that’s just my opinion!

The Alexis Mabille dress is available in cobalt blue and baby pink at AlOthman for KD 859.

Modern Mommies and Baby Bonnies

Reading the April edition of French Vogue is always a highlight to me- yes, I am a complete magazine junkie. French Vogue happens to be one of my favorites because of their always creative and crazy photo spreads. They play with the latest fashions, experiment with new models, and always have a fresh look on the modern trends; I love when fashion isn’t taken too seriously.

I came across this photo shoot that poked fun at all the new fashionable young women that are popping out babies. It was a quirky way of showing off the springs airy and romantic pieces from that were prevalent on the runways last October.

I especially like the image of her feeding her baby at such a distance, as if she is absolutely petrified to get anything spilled onto her stunning scalloped jacket.

What do you think of the shoot? Do you prefer the glossy gorgeous perfect shoots instead?

Sans Style at The Sultan Gallery

sans-style-invitation-2

The Sultan Gallery presents Sans Style: An Archetypal Vision by Tareq AlKandari. In architectural context, an archetype is a generic idealized model of an object or basic element from which similar instances are derived, copied, patterned, or emulated. The basic elements in this case are wall, floor, column, and a very special cube. Grounded by facts, and superimposed with expression, Sans Style represents an architectural vision of a place common to us all without stylized instances that have developed over time.

The exhibit is a collaboration of several mediums including painting, installations, and audio visuals resulting in a complex experience of the senses. A total temporary retro fit of the gallery will take place to further enhance this ambition.

Opening on Tuesday 26 May, 7 pm-9 pm.

27 May, 11AM-2PM and 7PM-9PM
28 May, 11AM-2PM only (closed on Fridays)
