Parisian Beginning

derek-lam

First day of Resort buying in Paree, and things are wonderful!

First appointment was at Derek Lam, which was bright, sunny, sporty, and a lot of fun. (see photo above).

He went on a tangent from his usual aesthetic, but remained with the essence of Derek.

We then roamed around and found a fantastic new collection! Every buyers dream, to come across a treasure that you know will be loved by your clients. More on this line in the future.

Our next appointment was Zero + Maria Cornejo, which was earthy and purest in their colors. They played with a lot of wrapping of fabrics, sparkly beaded shoulders, and the ever beloved jumpsuits. (See photo below). It was the first time I did the appointment without Maria there, she was traveling around Turkey to do some jersey sampling for next collection- interesting location. We also happened to be there the same day that their pop-up store was written about in Le Figaro newspaper. (see photo at bottom). I intend to visit it soon and tell you all about it!

We then stopped by a sweet cafe where we sat back and enjoyed our salad lunches with the sun beautifully baking us and the people roaming all around. I actually ran into a friend who was buying scoops of ice cream across the street- random, but nice.

Our next appointment was in the ludicrously crazy world of Balmain. This season hasn’t been photographed yet, so I am unable to share any photos. However, I can describe to you the look of the season so that you can all prepare yourselves for what is to come:

Think of a G.I. Jane, in the middle of combat, badges gleaming on her structured jackets, zippers embellishing her cuffs, silver mesh and black jersey dresses clinging to her toned hips, with rips and tears concealing her skin at several random places, and her strong and powerful.

Yes, yes, I know- nobody wears a dress in combat. But in the world of Balmain, she certainly does soldier sexy.

That was all the appointments to share of the day, other than a few stops at showrooms to look at a few potential clients.

My day tomorrow looks just as promising, and so I can’t wait to fall into a somber sleep and wake up energized for tomorrow! Not before my walk down to a cafe for a tangy lemon sugar crepe and a cafe o’lait to settle me for the night.

Until tomorrow!

A Fashion Tribute

mj1mj2

I have hesitated on whether I should post a few words following Michael Jackson‘s passing.  However, as a dedicated fan and a fashion blogger I realized the need to share on how this gifted artist has inspired millions of us, not only through his music but his persona and fashion.  Whether it was through his ‘Beat It’ red zipper accented leather jacket, his ‘Billie Jean’ slick leather suit, his signature cropped pants, embellished band blazer, or bedazzled glove, Michael was known to be a fashion inspiration in the 80′s and 90′s.  I believe that none of these looks would have been embraced on fashion runways if it weren’t for him.  Now that many high profile designers like Christophe Decarnin for Balmain and Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy are reviving the 80′s inspired trends (which Michael appeared in himself), I think it’s safe to say that the artist will continue to become a vital part of the fashion world.

RIP Michael and you will always be in our hearts …

Summer in the City

parisfrance2

“I love Paris in the springtime, I love Paris in the Fall, I love Paris in the Summer when it Sizzles...”

Mon Dieu! The time has swooshed away as I find myself already arriving in Paris prepared for the new buying trip. July brings forward the resort collections and the couture shows in the shining sunshine of the wonderful city of Paris.

Knowing the city does indeed sizzle, I have packed several of my beloved lightweight hippy-esque Halston dresses, a variety of my summer collection Louboutins to stay hip, and my sheer vanilla oversized Maria Cornejo cardigan to throw over my shoulder once the sun dips low.

As per usual, I will be posting daily about which collections i’ve seen, designers i’ve met, and trends i’ve spotted.

I’m in that mood of delighted ecstasy that hits me at the beginning of every trip, and I feel it will continue all week.

I will be sure to share every moment with you!

Mini-Stylish-Me

oscar_de_la_renta_children_1

Being a child of the 80’s, I remember a lot of crazy things like Strawberry Shortcake, Punky Brewster, break-dance, the Smurfs, Inspector Gadget, The Visitors, Knight Rider, the ice-skating ring, Sunkist, wacky new music videos on Channel Dubai 33 (whenever the TV transmission was clear that day). But the one thing I will never forget about the 80’s is the not-so-grand FASHION:The spandex, the wristbands, the neon clothes, the ruffled socks with gold ankle bracelets AND sandals, and spending agonizing hours trying to perfect that cool teased and hair-gelled fringe.

It’s a whole different ball game now. Today’s uber-chic girls will definitely not relate to our generation because the lucky little ones have Oscar de la Renta design clothes for them. Oscar has launched mini versions of his ready-to-wear dresses for girls. The line offered tiny shift dresses in floral prints to match the women’s dresses.

The children’s dresses retail for between $200 and $350, with $100 from the sale of each dress is donated to the Children’s Defense Fund. A second range of designs benefiting the charity is scheduled for winter 2009.

Kim’s got Jungle Fever!

kim-klardashian-in-balmain-jacket

Now that’s what I call showing your wild side.  Here’s Kim Kardashian teaming her blank tank and ripped denim capris with a zebra print and crystal embellished Balmain blazer (which was previously worn by Rihanna at one of her performances).  She seems to own this look, but I wish she had opted for a black bandage mini dress to make the blazer look uber Kim-Glam!

The Fall 2008 Balmain blazer is available at AlOthman at a reduced price.  Please contact the store for further details.

Trends: Asymmetrically Correct

dereklam_fw09_31

Whether you want to channel your version of Flash Dance (the movie) or go for a more romantic look, asymmetrical off-the-shoulder trend is an enchanting look for formal evenings. The one-strap cuts draw attention to the shoulder and the face. So show your pearly whites because everyone will be looking at you. This season AlOthman’s brands have presented different variations of this trend such as Derek Lam, Oscar de la Renta, Christopher Kane, Erin Featherstone, and Douglas Hannant.

Add some interest to the asymmetrical dress with a vintage brooch pinned to the side of the waist. Hair has to be up to show off the neckline of the dress.

Way To Go Bloggers!

holt-renfrew-3

Holt Renfrew, Canada’s prestigious department store chain (and one of my personal favorite shopping destinations there) recently announced that it will be revealing a run of blogger-inspired window displays for nine of its stores this Friday.  Of course the bloggers they have chosen as inspiration are all high profile names in North America, including those of Jak&Jil, Bryanboy, and the Sartorialist.  Holt Renfrew’s creative director John Gerhardt is planning to use captures from the blog sites and possibly mannequins dressed as the bloggers themselves! I wonder how we would be represented if the O Girls and I were chosen for a project like this.  Congrats to all the chosen bloggers!

I will try to get hold of photos and share them with you!

Questionable Answers

bruno-elle-interview

Last night, gazing through my library of old magazines, I picked out an Elle from 2007 to flip through while eating cherries on ice and having a lazy day in.

To my delight, I came across this interview with shoe designer Bruno Frisoni, that I found quite entertaining.

Here are some of the questions asked and his responses:

When are you happiest?

Discovering a new city.

Who is your best friend?

The sun.

If you were an inventor, what would you invent?

Pills for “warless” and “religionless”.

Who’s your favorite fictional character?

Betty Boop.

Whose diary would you most like to read?

God’s.

If you could come back as anything, what would it be?

Numero 5 de Chanel, as worn to bed by Marilyn Monroe.

Always…

Chocolate.

Never…

Cigarettes.

Trends: Pop Your Color

blog

Fall/Winter 2009 is all about deep, vivid colors like we haven’t seen in previous winter colections in a long time. Models blazed down the runway in vivid mix-and-match colors, giving outfits a bold new dynamism. Shop for clothes and accessories in neon orange, hot pink, cobalt blue, and shades of green and yellow. Jason Wu’s presented yellow fitted dress with strctured shoulders and Alexis Mabille’s bright purple pleated dress would make a big hit paired with red or turquoise accessories.

Mix electric color with understated pieces like black tuxedo jackets or tan pencil skirts, but for a more fashion-forward look, wear saturated hues together. With color this vibrant, keep your look simple. A little dab of make-up and a simple hair-do will be enough.
