My Mama Taught Me What I Know

grandma-028

I remember sitting on the carpeted floor of my mothers closet in our Paris apartment digging through the bottom drawer which held a massive mess of family photographs. Since all of ours were lost in the Gulf War, these treasures that lie directly under the drawer of my mother’s array of sheer silk stocking, were all the memories I could find. My favorites were those of my mother in the years before me as she stood on the beach in the 1970′s, hair blown out a la Fawcett, a little buttercup yellow bikini that sat low on her hips, and my eldest sister as a baby perched on her waist. Stunning? Absolutely.

Or the many images of her in her highwaisted Gaultier sailor pants, or her fitted cropped Chanel tweed jacket, or her salmon red Kelly bag, or her fabulous long lost Pucci minidress that she married my father in.

Yes, my  mother was the chicest woman everywhere she went, and taught me every ounce of fashion and style I know today.

So I came across a blog named- “My Mom The Style Icon” where people can send in photographs of their glamorous mothers and praise them in all their glory.

Take a look at it- the images will capture you and the stories will intrigue you.

Before Blogs Were Introduced…

erdem2

Before the age of blogging, most of us used to jolt down their special moments in a little hidden paper diary. I had one years ago, and even though I don’t use it now, I still keep it to this day. Not only did I document my daily happenings, but also I used to glue little stuff to it, like old tickets, photos, and magazine clippings. So I was thrilled to see one of my favorite designers collide fashion with paper diaries.  Erdem’s capsule line of stationery for Smythson has launched last Monday online  and I have my eyes set on the mid-size Soho and pocket Panama diaries which feature an enchanting engraved illustration of a girl with colour blocking in yellow or red. The collection also includes manuscript and Panama notebooks featuring Erdem’s signature digitalized artistic prints on the leather covers. All books and diaries feature equally exquisite print interiors taken from Erdem’s Resort 2010 collection and two pages of his charming illustrations repeated in miniature on Smythson’s blue featherweight paper. I have already placed my order before they get sold out. Now the question is, will I be using it?

Put a Fringe on It

Celebs are usually Chatty O‘s forte, but this time the shoe in question is already in the AlOthman OutletA gorgeous pair of golden, ankle fringe Christian Louboutin shoes were spotted on one of the biggest stars around. The fab fringed pair were rocked out by the queen B herself, Beyonce. I thought they looked familiar, and they just happened to be sitting in the window display of the outlet. Beyonce made a great choice by pairing the heels with a classic Herve Leger bandage dress. What’s great about these shoes is that the metallic color allows you to match them with just about anything. Although, you should probably go with a dress to really show them off. Take a style tip from Beyonce and pair them with a really bright choice.

The pretty shoes sitting in the outlet window…now who wants to take them home?

Graffiti Glamor

vogueparisnovember2009kaws1

Watching Grace Coddington in The September Issue a few days ago totally inspired this post. Although she’s such a odd looking woman, her ability to turn a fashion shoot into a work of art is oh-so amazing. Her experience in the fashion industry (she used to be a model!) along with her creative vision truly makes her Vogue’s gem. She’s definitely living in Anna Wintour’s shadow! I won’t spoil the movie, watch it and you’ll know exactly what I mean.

Photographed by Mario Sorrenti with the help of artist KAWS, this Graffi-Couture editorial will be featured in the November 2009 issue of Vogue Paris. Modeled by Raquel Zimmermann, the editorial, combines two of my favorite elements, fashion and street art. The graffiti is so colorful and eye-catching, I’m kind of glad the clothes were kept to neutral colors.

Turn to page 2 for the rest of this funky editorial!

Iridescent Princess

Amanda Seyfried has won me over with her role in Mama Mia, but I never thought she would give me the same ‘wow factor’ on the red carpet.  The actress glistened in a Peter Pilotto multi-colored silk mini dress with asymmetrical and cleverly folded panels to give the skirt enough draping.  The intricate detailing on the neckline and shoulders is what sets this dress apart from the usual printed mini dresses we see on a daily basis. Amanda did an excellent job accessorizing the dress with her black gladiator heels and golden cuff and clutch.

The dress is more than ideal for smaller/mixed weddings, fabulous dinners, and receptions … take my word on it, it’s gorgeous!

The Peter Pilotto dress is available at AlOthman.

Incubate This.

New York City, a place known for providing opportunity to all, is now giving those same chances to the young blooming designers.

Mayor Bloomberg has started work on a little project called the “Fashion Incubator” which will be a 10,000 square foot space with a limited number of areas that will be rented to upcoming designers. Located on 209 West 38th Street, the hub will hopefully be a fertile ground for emerging talents.

The CFDA is supporting the project and Mayor Bloomerg is hoping that this project will revive the garment district and the fashion industry.

This is somewhere I would love to spend an afternoon, uncovering great designers, meeting the personalities behind the work, and pick up some great young brands for the store. keep your eye out on this, I will definitely be one of their first visitors! For this among many other reasons- I heart NY!

These Boots Are Made For Flashing – Part 2

rmforlouboutin1

As you may have already noticed, our boots obsession did not stop at yesterday’s Chatty O’s post or mine. With all the various styles and designs we have received at our store, it’s pretty confusing to pick only one. Let’s just say I have a strong  feeling that I will be wearing a whole lot of boots this fall. And the ones I have selected for this post are so easy to wear. They will rock with an oversized knitted top and straight fit pants or pencil/mini skirts. In other words, these boots will do all the talking.

Just admire these cutout ankle boots by Christian Louboutin. They are strikingly chic. Team them with any of RM by Roland Mouret’sdresses or an oversized The Row blazer and cropped jeans for a bold modern look.

The Future of Women’s Fashion

Future of Fashion

Last week, Ashley Olsen, the Washington Post‘s Robin Givhan, and Isaac Mizrahi gathered to chat with Glamour‘s Cindi Leive about the “Future of Fashion.”  Judging from the discussion, the atmosphere was very casual and relaxed, more like a talk show setting. As a whole, the discussion was pretty insightful, and the selection of guests was diverse. Here are a few tidbits:

On what fashion magazines are doing wrong:

Isaac Mizrahi: “They’re too obsessed with movie stars. I like models, too.”

On receiving design criticism:

Ashley Olsen: “I don’t pay attention at all. I don’t go on the Internet, I don’t read magazines at all.”

On the the whirlwind fashion cycle:

Ashley Olsen: “The Row currently has three [store] deliveries a year, we want to add two more. I struggle with how many deliveries to make for Elizabeth and James to stay on trend.”

Isaac Mizrahi: ”Your store is like a produce department. You always want to keep fresh, beautiful produce in it. I don’t think Fall, Spring anymore, just twelve months a year.”

On celebrity designers:

Ashley Olsen: “A lot of celebrities get involved because they get a licensing partner, want to slap their name on clothes, and it will add to their brand. And for us, it was totally different. That wasn’t my point. For me, when I look at it as a celebrity brand, it’s almost silly to me, because I’m not coming at it from a celebrity standpoint [since she got out of acting at 18].”

On runway diversity:

Isaac Mizrahi: ”Honestly, I’ve actually booked girls [for runway] that weren’t obese, they were real girls. Like gorgeous anatomy. And one was a stripper. And you could feel the energy in the room just go down. Closed the books. Pens went down. They were angry. I could feel the anger. And I never did it again, because I thought ‘Why bother?’ It takes a lot to rile women. It takes like actual breasts. Someone with implants, they’re fine. Yes, you’re right. Fashion advertisements are hateful. Hateful. Yeah, but they wouldn’t do it unless it worked, right? It works.”

So the question of the night remained, what is the future of fashion? ”It’s going to be more democratic,” Givhan said.

“It’s going to be less obvious and less visual. More about fetishes. More fetishistic!” Mizrahi exclaimed.

Olsen responded with perhaps the most promising words. ”It’s going to be more exciting. And more fun.”

Fun is definitely on the agenda. What do you think?

Rihanna and Cheryl … Spotted!

rihanna-in-leopard-louboutin2

Personally I was never a big fan of leopard print and I wasn’t all that excited when fashion magazines were raving about the print blotting its way back to fashion runways. Nowadays I’m starting to grow a somewhat slow yet assuring fascination towards leopard print accessories, but as Thrifty O claimed in her Animal Instincts: Part I post, the rest of the outfit needs to be simplistic and neutrally hued … seriously just let the accessories speak for themselves!

Here is Rihanna literally spotted in her Christian Louboutin leopard print ankle booties which she matched with her grey sweater dress to add some edge to her look (Not that her sailor hat wasn’t enough).  Another fan of the Louboutin booties is Cheryl Cole who slipped into a pair to go with her torn black denims and black top.

If you want to take a jump start on the dotty trend but in a more subtle way, you can opt for the peep toe version … that’s the direction that I would take.

These Boots Are Made For Flashing

Ankle boots, knee-high boots, over-the-knees boots, thigh-high boots… whatever you want to pick! This fall, the choices are endless. Boots came in all shapes and lengths to suit every taste.  And we have just received an irrisitable collection of boots. Check out these boho-chic fringed suede Christian Louboutin boots for example. There is something about pulling on those second skin Loubs that makes them so alluring. All I need now is an bold ethnic print top or a short dress and keep the rest of my outfit and make-up plain and smiple.

Chritian Louboutin slouchy suede over-the knee boots in red and grey also made their way into AlOthman’s shelves and they had us all mesmerised by their softness and beautiful fit. I can just imagine myself wearing them with knitted dresses or button-down Alexander Wang white shirt and a pair of The Row Leggings.
